Antonio Barahona

Born in Seville in 1984, Antonio Barahona is a Spanish painter whose work explores landscape, cultural identity and the beauty of the everyday. He studied Fine Arts at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School in Seville, graduating in Painting from the University of Seville in 2008. In 2006, he received an Erasmus drawing grant from the Pietro Vanucci Art Foundation in Perugia, Italy.

In 2010, Barahona attended the Francisco de Goya painting workshop in Ávila, led by renowned Spanish painter Antonio López García, and was selected for the ninth residency at the Antonio Gala Foundation. There, he developed a project exploring Andalusian customs and traditions, seeking to reveal lesser-known aspects of the region’s cultural identity through painting. He continued to refine his practice through workshops with internationally recognised artists, including Golucho, Antonio López and Andrés García Ibáñez.

A grant from the Andalusian Government in 2014 enabled Barahona to develop The Past in the Present: Constructions of the Contemporary Landscape from the Sublime, curated by Mariana Hormaechea. The project marked an important turning point in his artistic development, deepening his engagement with landscape and its relationship to memory, perception and the contemporary world.

His work has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Paul Ricard Award and José Arpa Award in 2019, the Zabaleta Award in 2016, and first prize at the XXV Ciudad de Álora International Painting Competition in 2014. In 2012, he was selected for the prestigious BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Earlier accolades include second prize in the AXA Burgos Cathedral Painting Prize in 2011 and first prize at the Ateneo de Sevilla National Painting Award in 2010.

Barahona has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions. Notable presentations include El asombro de lo cotidiano at SharonArt, León (2019), 1929, Paisismo Contemporáneo at Lugadero, Seville (2014), and Verdes Ramas at El Quatre Art Gallery, Barcelona (2014).

Antonio Barahona lives and works in Seville, Spain.
